Oxygen consumption in the prosobranch snail Viviparus contectoides (Mollusca: Gastropoda). I. Effects of weight and activity.

چکیده
Ah&met--1. Metabolic rate (cm3 Odhr and log cm3 Odhr) of Vivipaw con~ec~oide~ is dependent on weight and log weight at levels of minimum and intermediate activity in males and minimum activity in females. 2. Weight specific oxygen consumption and log weight specific oxygen consumption of I’. contectoides is dependent on weight and log weight at levels of intermediate and maximum activity in males and at all activity levels in females. 3. Respiration coefficients are affected by activity level or time of day. They decrease significantly with increasing activity level in males. Respiration coefficients are generally lower than literature values. 4. The relationship of oxygen consumption to weight is similar for males and females at each level of activity. 5. Mean absolute oxygen consumption (cma/hr) is greater for females than males at each activity level. Mean weight of females is greater than mean weight of males.

Oxygen consumption in the prosobranch snail Viviparus contectoides (Mollusca: Gastropoda)--II. Effects of temperature and pH.
-1. Metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) of Viviparus contectoides is directly dependent on temperature. 2. Males have a rectilinear relationship between weight-adjusted oxygen consumption and temperature. Females have a curvilinear relationship. 3. There was a significant sexual difference in the relationship of weight-adjusted oxygen consumption and temperature, with the mean value for males b...
متن کاملThe formation of urine by the prosobranch gastropod mollusc Viviparus viviparus Linn.
In all aquatic molluscs examined (Anodonta—Picken, 1937; Haliotis—Harrison, 1962; Octopus—Potts & Martin, 1963), blood is filtered through the wall of the heart (or branchial heart appendages in Octopus) into the pericardium. The pericardial fluid passes to the kidney, where secretion and reabsorption modify it to form the final urine. In the terrestrial pulmonates, however (Achatina—Martin, Ha...
متن کاملPreliminary Study on Aquatic Snail Species of Bulinus globosus (Morelet, 1866) (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Planorbidae) from Nankumba Peninsula, Cape Maclear Island, South-East Arm of Lake Malawi
The present investigation of shallow-water gastropod Bulinus globosus is reported on nearshore sites in and around Cape Maclear on the northwestern part of the Nankumba Peninsula, Lake Malawi (part of Lake Malawi National Park) at a depth of 10 M. The present remark focuses on the geographical distribution and habitats of this group and sample have observed in Cape Maclear Island, Republic of M...
متن کاملA simple technique for predicting the biomass of a prosobranch snail.
l. A simple technique was developed for accurately predicting the biomass of the freshwater prosobranch Viuiparus contectoides (Mesogastrapoda: Viviparidae) (Binney, 1865). 2. Regression of dry weight (biomass) on wet weight yielded a regression coefficient (r’) of 0.99 with an associated P < 0.001. 3. Biomass, therefore, can be predicted by measuring wet weights without sacrificing specimens.
متن کاملPropagation of action potentials through electrotonic junctions in the salivary glands of the pulmonate mollusc, Helisoma trivolvis.
The secretory cells of the salivary glands of the snail, Helisoma trivolvis, exhibit regenerative, overshooting action potentials whose ampliture may exceed 100 mV. The salivary glands consist of paired, tubular, epithelial structures with acinar outpocketings. The secretory cells display extensive electrical coupling which allows action potentials to propagate along the glandular epithelium. S...
